The ancient city of Salona, known as Colonia Martia Iulia Salonae, became the capital of the Roman Empire on the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea, primarily due to its support for Caesar in the civil war against Pompey. Caesar himself even stayed in Salona during one winter.
